Charity Challenge -what do you think - No 3
Here is an idea I had and have mentioned it to a few other forum members.
The great challenge by F&E has finished and now is a good time to discuss possibilities for another one at a later date.
I would really like input from many members regarding options, their thoughts on the whole concept and how to make it work.
My basic concept is to have another challenge and all entries be sent to one place and sold with the money going to charity (Salvation Army) as apposed to the maker/member/participant keeping them.
We need to keep any expense to the members/participants to a minimum and at the same time maximize the donation to a charity.
Options for wood - does each person donate/supply there own piece of wood to a specified size/weight. This would then place the onus on the participant to supply timber that doesn’t crack or deteriorate before the sale. Does the freight to the person selling determine what size peice of wood you use. Or does everyone use the same species of wood from one supplier. This will cost the participant the postage from the wood donor to them as well as when they finish it they would also still need to pay the freight to the seller.
Selling – I hope there is a forum member out there that already runs a market stall or some sale option that could offer to “market” all the entries for us and forward the money to the Salvo’s, this would be ideal. They would need to price the items to what their experience tells them they are worth. Remember we would have many different standards and types of items to sell. I don’t think we need to know what each individual item makes just a total to the charity. This would save any distaste over the price placed on each item. If we go Ebay to sell then who sets the price or do we sell everything with no reserve/starting price, we don’t want to take 6 months to sell everything we need a result in weeks not months. The only thing is the item must turn up to be sold or it is not regarded as part of the competition apart from this I don’t see that the sale of items needs to have any relationship to the judging/winner
Salvos – they are a good charity that everyone can relate too and by using one charity hopefully they would get a substantial amount instead of 10 charities getting a little bit each. Also it is easier for the person doing the selling. If this works someone else can run one for a different charity if they wish at a later date.
Judging – there has been mention of magazines getting involved – is this good, will they want to take control, would they do the judging or do the members want to judge. I think if the members judge then why not have one thread - start at a dertermined date - with a poll and each person enter their own photos etc and have a second thread for comments. (the same as the last one but not confidential). The second thread could have reasons and comments from members before the winner is known.
Winners – trophies, prizes etc well that is up to everyone as to what they want.
What do you think about the idea. Remember we want items that are saleable with minimal cost to the participant. Chop it up, dissect it and we will see where it leads too.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by Calm; 7th May 2008 at 07:04 AM. Reason: changed paragraphs.

Best wishes. You are a much bigger glutton for punishment than I am. Happy to help with whatever comes out of this, although I would prefer other choices for the recipient charity. This will be the first difficulty to address, IMHO.

would it be possible for whomever made the piece to nominate the charity they want the money for their object to go to?
I know I would like to see another recipient than the Salvoes but that is another story.

The SALVOS is a great idea for a charity I couldn`t think of a better organisation to make money for.

We could do like LumberJocks did and have a 2by4 comp? That way its easy(and cheap) for everyone to obtain the material.
I think the RFDS or The Anti Cancer Foundation are worthy charity's.....................................................................

Interesting! I like the ideas and discussion resulting. I'd also support RFDS.
Selling the items at a market stall is also a promising idea.
I'd be happy to put up one of my leather-bound notebook covers as a prize.
cheers

I think that selling them at a market stall is a guaranteed way to sell them for less than they are worth!
This is exacerbated by the fact that there will be a wide range of product and quality as well, with some qualifying as high-end art, and others as "beginner" pieces.
It's a great idea, but one that has a few hidden traps!
The organiser can choose the charity.
Is there a gallery in one of the larger cities (Sydney, Melbourne or Bungendore ) that would be prepared to sell them as an exhibition? It seems to me that would be the best way to get a fair value for each. Of course the gallery would need to be paid, but so what?
Cheers,
P

How about Bunnings or mitre 10 or other hardware chain(or Carbatech or Mathews timber?) donate the materials and have display at one of their stores? (especially if we are talking pine.) If its for charity it might get them involved for their own corprate browny points. And get media coverage.
But it is quite nice being just"us". Its funn at the moment. Don't really want it to turn into a headache for someone.Last edited by tea lady; 7th May 2008 at 11:59 AM. Reason: 'Nother thought.

I put my hand up but I can't start til mid June.
dlim2986 also offered some timber for an upcoming challenge.
If dlim2986 wants to go first, that is fine with me.
If somebody else wants to do the leg work on a charity challenge, they can jump right in but, as I have already said, it has been attempted before & it fell flat about half way through.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

My thought was to put it up on eBay (as separate listings, also members could bid on items that they wanted to buy) after the voting had finished, and the maker of the item could choose where the money was to go.
My offer of Red Cedar is still available.
But it looks there are too many issue to be resolved, so I am staying out of the discussion. I would just be happy with what was done last time, because it looked as if everyone had a good time.

Thanks for the input, keep it up this is what i hoped for - members opinions
NO 3 - I know i put no 3 in the heading but it is more to get discussion/opinions on an idea i had a while ago rather than wanting to be next. My personal opinion is 2 or maybe 3 a year would be plenty, no need to have one running all the time.
Charity - as bitingmidge said the organiser can choose the charity, my preference would be Royal Childrens Hospital but that is a state charity or "Kids with Cancer" or something like that but i thought a charity that is australian wide was better, if someone wanted a different charity then maybe next time.
Anyway it is very interesting to see different opinions, remember its like something else everyone has one.
Keep them coming
cheersregards
