    A lot I looked at are in US measurement;
I saw some on Amazon, but they aren't in Aussie specs.

    Amazon.com

    They are also not slotted.

Personally I would not worry but SWMBO has gone and got me to go to lot of trouble to get it right.

Fortress screws in NZ offer a brass #5g slot screw pan head, I had a lengthy reply with a part number but the internet ate my homework

I found #5=3.2mm I found suppliers like to stock even guage sizes not odd. And I found wurth had nickel slot head screws but their search engine would not allow me to select size.

if uniformity is the only requirement can you order 200 and replace all screws?

sorry to be of little/no help
    cheers

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes #5 is about 3.2mm and suppliers usually just stock even sizes.

I'm basically replacing all 40 hinge screws.
Well I need to replace about half the screws because they are missing and the other half are paint encrusted and rusty.

SWMBO doesn't want brass - she wants original which are plain steel but I have convinced her that nickel plated would last longer.
I also have to resurrect the hinges which are an older version of the 288 pattern cabinet Hinge.

I wanted to just buy new 288s from Bunnings but SWMBO said new ones would look too "shiny" and wants the old hinges recovered so they are currently soaking in paint stripper.
The old ones are on the tatty side somewhat tatty but whatever SWMBO wants she gets.
I will probably have to paint them with some clear matt lacquer so they dont rust.

I found some #5 roundhead slotted nickels on ebay - might have to settle for those.

Then I have to recover the 5 door handle and catches.
    I never ends.

I have a couple of boxes of #5 x 5/8 countersunk, but they are not nickel plated and are Phillips head.

If all else fails, Bob, you are welcome to them as they were given to me some time ago and I will never use them.

Suppose SS and phillips head have been ruled out as "not 1940's"?

Here is another possibility on ebay:
C' SUNK SLOTTED STEEL WOOD SCREWS 5/8" x 5g AC JAPAN - New Old Stock 144 pcs | eBay

If you cannot find anything suitable, is there enough metal in the hinges to ream out the holes a little and convert to 3.5 or even 4 mm metric?

Yes I could ream out but it has to be slotted screw.
Anyway I have decided to go with Auscab's screws.

Thanks to all that provided info.

    Cheers

Yes that's exactly what I mean, otherwise you might as well use Philips
