Where can I get one of these cheaper?
Hello playmates.
I am wondering where I can get one of these little beauties cheaper than this one?

Scrooge,
Just cut the ends off one of these:

(Although I used a $24.00 one from a "cheap" shop) on my thicknesser.
Cheers,

I was thinking of butchering one of the cheap ones, but I wanted to see if I could get the dedicated type cheaper first.
I need two, one for the thicknesser and one for the drum sander I'm building.
Plus the dedicated one reads in the vertical mode, and I dont think it would be as easy to set "anywhere" as zero.
I would hate to have to set up the machine ever time I pushed the zero button by mistake.
Cheers, Allan

Haven't been able to get another one.
They had laser levels for less than $20 as well, but now they are around $29.00.
Plastic dial versions are always around in the mid $20's and I have had one for four or five years, could easily be adapted for jigs and things.
Cheers,
P

Hi Allan
I can't see why you would need to set the machine up each time you pressed the zero button. All you would need to do is wind the machine down to the bottom and then press the zero again. Or is that what you meant by set up? :confused:Bob Willson

Simply build up a ridge around the On/Zero button so that it requires a deliberate action to sero the unit.
Something like a very short piece of small diameter aluminium tubing glued around the button should do the job.
FWIW the Kinchrome digital caliper I use for my metalwork, requires quite a distinctive press, a light press on the button does nothing.

Peter

Can't offer a cheaper alternative, but I do have one of the Carbatec dedicated digital scale units on my thicknesser and it is very useful.
I didn't pay that much though (approximately half) as mine came as part of a retrospective special offer about 6 months after I bought the 15" thicknesser.
Guess I could get the model number and manufacturers name off it if it’s of use to you.
Cheers
Dave

Nah, its right Dave, thanks anyway.
I've tracked down the manufacturers for these things, they are all in China and I think you have to buy a box load.

So how much does a box load cost? If the price is right I would buy two.
If it's wrong I wouldn't.Bob Willson

Ozwinner,
If you go to ebay.com and type in the search box "digital depth gage" (yes, the spelling is correct) you will find some things like vernier calipers without the jaws that you may be able to adapt to your purpose- quite cheap too!

I got the kids, and Ebay got all the chattels.
