    Default Is this chisel normal?

Hi, I have this old gouge chisel. I am wondering if the bevel is on the correct side. On this one the bevel is on the inside of the hollow. I only found references and sharpening tutorials where the bevel is on the outside.

Now I am wondering if somebody stuffed this up and if I can fix that?

No mate, there are inside and outside gouges, just like you would flip a normal firmer chisel over ,sometimes with a gouge you want the bevel on a different side, except you can’t just flip it over like a normal chisel.

Thanks. Now I feel embarrassed. With your comment I had an other look online and found heaps on gouges with the bevel on the inside. Also some on restoration.

I wish I had that second look earlier before posting my query......

Sometimes referred to as "incannel" and "outcannel."

A small scribing gouge like you have would be used for scribed joints on mouldings.
A longer paring gouge would be used by a Patternmaker for coreboxes.
