Chook's 2013 Guide to Workshop fashion
I am a bit of a slob when it comes to dressing up. If ever I am wearing nice clothes and I am not at work and being paid, then feel for my pulse. I am probably dead and the undertaker has dressed me up for my last big day out. So when I am in the shed I normally wear thongs, a blue or grey singlet and a pair of stubbies. This is all that I ever wear and all that is required of the fashionable man about the workshop in 2013.
Except for the thongs.
Yesterday I dropped a small piece of pine from about 500 mm onto the toe of my left foot. And after the unfathomable laws on nature in landed on a corner just on the softest part of my big toe. No problems. Even a big sook like me can handle that.
Then later in the day a knocked my marking knife off the bench and again because it was sharp it landed point down on the cement floor. No problems there. I can sharpen a knife easy. But then I got to thinking about what would have happened if, instead of falling on the floor, it had fallen on my foot. Or what if my razor sharp 1 inch chisel fell 900 mm onto my foot. Obviously it would fall sharp end down and it would only fall when it was really sharp. I suppose I would have to content myself with counting to 9 using my toes.
There are good reasons why the Workplace Safety people mandate solid footwear in the workplace and so the future I will be wearing enclosed shoes in my workshop. My age is still less than my number of posts

25mm chisel falling onto cement floor would cause a lot of damage - to the chisel.
I have upset one of the office staff at work - they came into the workshop in open shoes and I told them it was unsuitable for OH & S.
