Default Choosing a Type of Tenon for a Mortise and Tenon Joint

    Hi all,

I am currently planning to make a small stool which uses mortise and tenon joints (imitating the ones in my apartment). I was wondering whether the kind of tenon used is important.

More precisely, does it make a difference whether I use a) a tenon that has been made by cutting 4 pieces of wood or b) a tenon that has been made by cutting just 2 pieces of wood ?

Apologies that I don't know the professional names for those two kinds of tenon!

    Any advice would be great.

I presume you mean these two types of M&T joints.

The double M&T below is better where the stretcher is small in section, because it doubles the effective gluing area.

    Hi Alex,

    Thanks for the reply.

That wasn't quite the two kinds I meant. I think the proper way to say it is "shouldered tenon" versus a "shoulderless tenon".

I've got a nice (old) book by Sam Allen which gives some useful advice so I'll try to find it tomorrow and scan some interesting pages.
