    Default Chopping board help

    Hey lumber junkies,
Looking for some help making some chopping boards.

I'm thinking of a crosscut slab or burl... I want something cool looking & not square.

The timber species? It needs to be hard as this item would be used daily.

I've got some info on finishing & will go with a natural oil & maintain this regularly.

Your input is greatly appreciated on all of the above....

    cheers

I'd be reconsidering your options, crosscut slabs in hardwood will most likely split and hardwood burls will blunt your knife every time you use it.

Laminated endgrain is the way to go, won't split if you use sound dry timber and knives stay sharp
    Cheers

Is there a distinction between cutting and chopping boards?

A 'Cutting Board' is something like a breadboard. As noted above the blade touching the crossgrain can blunt the knife, which is why breadknives have the scalloped cutting edge.

A 'Chopping Board' think butchers block, end grain normally in segments put together, deigned to take the constant chopping action oft heir big knives and cleavers when rendering meat into joints. Used in the home as smaller versions as well, but probably as breadboards because 'that's what the Lady of the house want's!'
