Cigar box guitars? Help please.
I thought there was a dedicated section but I may have overlooked it.
i have a few plans for these but would like some more information. Not being an avid cigar smoker, although I love a villager #6 I don't have thicknesses of timber or other reasonable plans to DIY one. I want to make an acoustic for my brother as a birthday pressie. I think my skills have progressed this far and I feel confident I could pull this off.
the plans don't specify string tension screws and I will assume bolts wont do it??
How do I hold the strings in place on the top of the neck? I reckon I am mostly there, buy some nice tone wood and build a box, get some other, possibly hardwood for the neck and off set the head. Run the neck right through the box so the strings carry across it. How do I raise the strings to tone across the hole, from the plans I have they are short and very close to the resonating hole. There are no steel sections to get good chords from? I assume this is the beauty of the sound it's like a fret less base?
shouldnt the neck be at the back and not the front like in the plans or am I reading them wrong? Or have I mixed up a couple of sets of plans in my head?
im looking for an easily put together set of plans that make a reasonable sound, with wood readily available in thicknesses I can maybe buy?? Basically a simple first timer box I can build without all the tools in the world.
am I kidding myself or can it be done.
i am not a muso as you can tell but I'd like to have a go.
thanks for any and all replies they will be appreciated.

The Musical Instruments section is on a tab at the top of the page. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
I've never seen these cigar-box guitars before. Very interesting.

I have just built 2 basic Guitars for the Grand Children, and have to build a Bass for my Son, here are a couple of pic's, .
Cigarbox nation is a good place to start, the fittings, are available on E-bay for reasonable costs, I brought the tuner pegs for less than $10.00 delivered.
Also go to the Music section on the top of the main menu, and ask your questions.

My box guitar. The hard thing for anyone who has built serious instruments is to build to the rough and ready ethic. I wanted a functioning acoustic box, most cbgs rely on amplification. I have a Kala U bass planned in the proper cbg style. Kala U-Bass demo - YouTube

I have replaced the sagging tone bars and the top is now right.Cheers, Bill

Contagious?
I think I'm getting the bug.....
I've thought about making an accoustic guitar on and off for a while, but balked at the curved sides.

Baught the pegs and a cheapo pickup today from ebay less than $12 delivered pickup is just a small microphone i think so should be able to play it acoustic or electric, started looking through the wood pile for a neck. Will probebly be spotted gum atm. Thicknessed bunnies pine for the box. Im not going to try frets with this one. String risers will be gidgee. I like the idea of using some scrap/left over timber laying around the place for the whole build.
need to source some strings and work out what key to buy. It will be a 3 string.
Thanks for the links and piccies helped there is a wealth of info out there. I didnt know they were that popular an instrument. Did find a piccy of sir Paul playing one though.
