    Default Clamp Rack +

    G'day All

Finally became fed up with the Beatle song of "Here There and Everywhere" when it came to my clamps.

I have tried to store them in about 8 different ways - some only marginally better than dismal. Finally I have come up with plan "9 Z" which seems to work well.

The frame and shelves have been constructed using "leftovers" from previous jobs, I had to buy 2 casters.

One side is vertical while the K body clamp side is raked at a 4 degree angle. The K bodies are held in place by their handles which allows them to be removed/replaced one handed - I had tried a number of ways which involved clenching them to the top rail but this alway required 2 hands.

The F clamps are very heavy and help to provide added stability by being located in a rack on the bottom shelf - again one handed removal.

The intermediate shelves contain my sanders, boxes of screws etc - the top shelf is for glues and some finishing products which most will probably recognise.

It is built in my usual "brick outhouse" tradition but seems to work quite well and rolls to the job instead of me crossing the shed in a number of directions getting clamps etc.

The pix should show it all - works for me, and, if it helps out, then great.

    Regards,
    Bob

Oh to be able to have all my clamps in one spot, not spread around 6 meters of wall space and a couple of rafters.

Good looking clamp cart there Bob, if the shed falls down, the cart will still be standing

Nice looking clamp cart there Bob

I see one major problem with your design. If you buy a couple of more clamps there's no where to fit them.

and don't say you've got enough, because you've never got enough clamps

That thought did cross my mind when I had finished it - perhaps another version could be on the cards at a later date as I have to agree with you that you can never have enough clamps.

My pipe clamps and large bar clamps are still hanging on the wall - if I had added them to the original I probably would have required a Mack or Kenworth to move it around

    Thumbs up

That is actually quite disgusting. Do you wish to be thrown out of here?

Seriously though, you have made a brilliant storage unit.bravabrava

Brilliant Bob, well done! I love the towel bars on the side...very clever. Putting it all on wheels makes loads of sense, and I'm sitting here thinking about how to add casters to my slapdash rack.

    Kudos.

It is a great idea the moveability makes it attractive for me. I am a person that hasn't got time to put the clamps back hanging on the wall, so I finish with clamps laying everywhere. I will try your design

Wow!! That has to be one of the finest designer units for a workshop I've seen yet! Looks amazing. I'd be proud to have that as an island in my kitchen.........clamps 'nd all! And to echo the others, great to be able to move to the work etc. I'm forever tripping over clamps that I 'will put back' in a minute! Great work Thanks for sharing

    Go for it

If I can be of any further help just ask - I will be offline shortly for a couple of weeks but will get to it as soon as I can.

With regards the other comments about leaving clamps all over the place - this was a major problem for me also - what I'm finding now is that when I remove clamps from a job instead of putting them on the bench/floor etc - as the rack is so close and handy the clamps are simply dropped back in their location - this is the bonus for me of not having to use 2 hands to clench them in place.

    Regards,
    Bob

    3 a bench top mount a linisher/disk sander

That's a work of art, Bob - my effort is strictly utilitarian - the result of at least 2 re-models, & trying to keep as many clamps in the one spot as possible. The damn things do breed when you're not looking!
I managed to accomodate a couple of shorter pipe clamps on my rack, but I still have to go to the other end of the shed for the long (4'-6') ones....

    That is looking good.

If these are all your clamps then you have done well. I used the an old single bed head to store most of my clamps. Something that I found on the street. Just put a couple of feet to give it some stability.

It's a great clamp rack Bob and having just spent some time putting all my machinery on wheels, I can appreciate how useful the clamp rack will be.
Now for the nit picking and this is from someone who hasn't made a rack yet.
I notice that the slotted rack appears to be made of soft wood with the slots cut across the grain. From personal experience I have found this type of cut produces a weakness because of the short grained block that is left. I have had blocks fracture along the grain. Other clamp racks I have seen use slotted ply and perhaps you might consider sandwiching the softwood between two outers of even a four mill ply for support.
