only other suggestion is that one of my 'magic' shop aids is old bars of soap... any screw gets dragged across one before driven, and drill bits of 'normal' size (up to, say, 12 mm) get the same treatment. And plus 1 for brad point....

I also suspect that hole number 2 shows a not properly clamped down sacrificial piece... I have had great success with this, using mdf - but it needs to be firmly down on the stuff... surprised to see the 'chipping' there in the op.

Now ya've given me DP envy Doug! I've been eyeing the small Nova for a while & trying hard to convince myself I don't really need it & my ~25 yr old Carbatec thing will see me out. But the spindle bearings are coming to the end of their lives & it's not really up to precision work in metal - even for woodwork tolerances it's starting to become a bit sloppy. Being able to set speeds at the turn of a dial would be sooo nice, and setting depth likewise seems like a dream! I might be forced to take the plunge before the year is out.....

    Cheers,

At the risk of sounding like I am trying to sell you on it Ian, the best feature I have found it the autostart and reverse.

As you advance the quill the motor starts automatically, then it drills at the preset speed to the preset depth then stops briefly then reverses for two seconds while you reverse the drill back up and it stops again. It's great for multiple holes along a straight line with stops on the fence or with the laser crosshairs (sold separately) It eliminates all the unnecessary movements and really speeds up the work. Sometimes I wish it only reversed for one second instead of two. There might be somewhere that I can change that but it hasn't bothered me enough to go looking for it yet.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.
