    Hi Jill,

The metal detector I have is this one: Metal Detector : CARBA-TEC

It is simply called Metal Detector Body Scanner Model TS80A. No specific brand name.

I like using recycled timber and what issatree says about cutting the ends off is correct but your point about discovering the buried or broken-off nails is equally correct because they are not always at the ends and those maniacs with the staple guns will use 17 staples when 2 would do and their little legs break off too. I have discovered little metal gremlins with the metal detector despite careful visual checking before planing and having destroyed a planer blade on one I missed before investing in the MD, the initial purchase price has been well justified. Also, if one obtains recycled stock from another party, there is no telling just how careful the denailing process has been.

Wrt sensitivity, I run the detector over both surfaces and if I'm holding the timber less than about 200mm from the concrete floor, it will detect the reinforcing rods. I know they are pretty hefty but my view is that it is sensitive enough for my needs considering I run the instrument virtually touching the surface of the timber.

Don't forget, if it saves one planer knife, you'll be ahead!

    Cheers
    Brian

I would also be cautious about using treated pine pallets. These will not be stamped and I don't believe its good eating material for Wabbits !!!
Especially if your considering fatening them up for X-Mas !!!
