whats the best way to clean paint brushes without poluting the environment?

use water based paints

If using oil based paints, in between coats wrap your brush in plastic wrap and freeze them. On thawing again they can be used straight away. Once the job is complete let the brush dry and bin it.
I find that on most jobs the above is equal to 5 - 8 brush cleaning episodes.
