Clearvue dust extraction question
Hey All,
I have a clearvue extractor with a Powtran VFD as I didn’t have 3phase power back when I got the unit, I’ve since had 3 phase connected and am wondering if I would be better off hooking the motor up in 3 phase or keeping it running through the VFD.
The only reason I’m not sure is obviously I would lose the ability to be able to change the Hz setting on the VFD of which allows the motor to spin faster if I require more suction, will I have a slower motor without the VFD running 3 phase?
Thoughts please.
Thanks
Joel.

The soft start is another advantage and limits the mechanical stresses on the motor as well as reducing the current demand by a LOT. I have the same as you, a choice on how it is run either from 415V or 220V and for a long time I ran it from 220V. If it is an 1800 use 60hz, a Max will do the same work at 50hz. I now run my 1800 from 415V at 70hz with a VFD.

The motor will run at the same speed for different line voltages.
415V will be slightly more efficient but there is no reason to switch from 240V to 415V
You would have to pay for a new VFD and posssibly pay someone to wire it up for you as well as install a 3 phase outlet.
Just leave the 240V VFD in place. Those were the droids I was looking for.

As NCarcher says there is no advantage to change. If you want to have a chat about this PM me with your contact details. The impeller speed is something that depends on the impeller size and a few other factors as well.

It will depends at what frequency the OP wants to operate at.
At 50Hz a loaded 240V 4HP motor draws about 9A from the single phase supply which can be handled by a standard 10A circuit.
At 60Hz a 240V motor will run about 12A - needs a 15A circuit
At 70Hz it will be more than 15A so will need a 20A circuit.
At this stage if your VFD is a dual 3P/SP input and you want to run at 70Hz, it might be worth considering a 3P circuit.

As a rule I find talking about this sort of question far better than trying to use a forum such as this or email. it provides far more clarity in a short time and the instantaneous nature of taking gives a far better understanding of the issues.
