Coffee table help
Hi,
I got given this slab of timber roughly 1400mm long and 450mm at its widest point which was from an old coffee table. I removed the varnish with some 36 grit on the belt sander and I plan to make a coffee table and try and turn some legs for it out of campha Laurel. I have never made a coffee table before and have some questions.
1.What species of timber is it?
2.What can I use to fill the holes/cracks?
3.Would turned legs suit it?
4.What is the easiest and strongest method of joining the legs to the table?
5.What finish is resistant to coffee stains?
The pictures are pretty crap because the pics were taken this afternoon.
Thanks,
Bailey

Patience my friend! Patience!
I think turned legs would be OK.
You could attach them using blocks of timber. Angle a hole for the legs in the blocks,
screw glue the block to the base of the table and then glue the legs into the holes.
Don't splay them too much is my advice.

I can't be sure as I've never seen it in a branch slice before, but the close ups look like Iroko or one of the other Teak substitutes to me.
Dragonfly
No-one suspects the dragonfly!

I would fill the gaps with two part epoxy. Might tint it black or something like that. Not to much so as to limit sanding.
