    Default Coffee Table WIP

Mt niece asked me for a 900 X 900 mm X 500 mm high coffee table. Making it from Camphor Laurel. She chose the top design of the two in the pic.

    Sketch.jpg
First step ... cut the legs on the bandsaw and rough sand them on the linisher ...

    IMAG0612[1].jpg

Thinking of putting a slipper foot on the legs (as opposed to a round foot).

Next the legs will get rounded off ... when I get around to it.

Top will be veneered camphor laurel over MDF substrate with timber edges ... veneer will run all the way to the routed edge.

    Have fun!

And my feet, too. Decided to put a slipper foot on these legs. I like them ... a nice change from rounded feet.

Might round off the toe just a tad more.

Yes ... but I slowed them down a bit recently. Told them that for all future orders they will need to pay for materials.

The queue used to extend to the Redcliffe Jetty. Now it only extends to Chermside shopping centre.

    Have fun!

Decided to veneer the bottom of the table before putting on the timber edges, so the cheaper veneer would not show along the bottom edge. Here it is. Next the timber edges go on.

Just for kicks I decided not to edge glue the veneers before gluing them to the substrate. I taped them together, ran a bead of glue into each seam just before spreading the glue and pressing the substrate to the veneer. Worked like a charm, but I doubt I'll do that for the face veneers. If something moved a gap might appear in the face veneers. Not good for the face surface, but not a big deal for the bottom of the table top.

Had to make a bigger veneer bag, as the bags I have would not fit a 900 X 900 mm table top.

And here is the face surface for the top of the coffee table. There are eight veneers, each 220 X 440 X 3 mm when cut. Finished thickness will be about 2 mm. The pattern match is not as good as I would prefer, but the grain sloped through the slab. This is not an issue if you only cut (say) two or four veneers, but when eight are cut it is more difficult to find wood where the pattern will match very well.

Still, it is pretty and the colours should look good once lacquer is applied.

I do love my vacuum press. Cheap as chips and works like a charm.

    Hi John,
The top will look fantastic with a coat of lacquer you are really getting i nto the book match with this one and yes it is extremely difficult to match with that many cuts, you would need some very straight plain grain to get a match with that many or be extremely lucky with figured grain but you have done a great job with this.
    Regards Rod.

    Thanks Rod,

Routed the top this morning with a new bit that gives an elliptical shape to the edge.

The remainder of the day is taken up with real work (bugger!), so making up the frame and fitting the legs will need to wait for another day.

    Cheerio!

Cross member in place to support top ... ledgers in to which top will be screwed ... knee braces in corners for a bit of additional support/strength.

Next comes finish sanding and lacquer.

Note the head of the quality control department in the top left corner of pic. The QC guys wear black coats in my shop. This one growls when unhappy and boofs when pleased with the job.

    Have fun!

What is the sanding sealer you are using? Does it have micro granules?
