    Default Coloured Veneer

    Hi,

I've seen coloured veneer (full colour penetration - red, black, blue, yellow etc, etc) readily available in the USA and UK but shipping appears outrageous.

I cannot find a source locally (Australia)

    Anyone know of source?

Could look into dyeing your own if you don't have any luck.

    Hi Gop,

Luthiers suppliers usually have them. Here’s one: Veneers - Acoustic + Classical - Timber - Materials + Supplies

I also find Peter and Rita Karsai (Etsy shop TheVeneerShop) are pretty good. They are in Hungary, but their shipping always seems low to me.

    Good luck!

Thankyou so much Brian, much appreciated.

I have tinkered a bit trying to make my own by simply submerging the veneer, even after a month the colour had not penetrated. I haven't yet tried vacuum / pressure / slow cook methods and would only so as a last resort.

I have played around a bit with a vacuum chamber for dyeing small sheets / thin woods with dyed Cactus Juice, but with random success. Vacuum isn't viable for hobby dyeing work as the "sovlent" boils off under vacuum.

Also attempted long periods of the simple submersion in a bath no vacuum or pressure. Base species makes a huge difference, my best outcomes have been with brown or silver quandong veneer.

I was chasing strong yellow & greens with full penetration as I cut through the veneers so the veneer is seen as a long or cross section and not as face veneer i.e. Tunbridge ware pattern blocks etc. Black is not such a challenge but it makes you appreciate the quality and consistency of commercially dyed veneers.

Have a look at New Age Veneers. They supply reconstituted wood veneers in a variety of colours, grains and patterns.
