Default Complete beginner, basic dovetail proj, need small volume wood supplier in Melb north

I'd like to attempt a simple trophy as a first woodworking project, which would be made from two boards (each maybe 100mm x 150mm x 20mm) joined in a dovetail to stand up in an L-shape, like a book-end.

My main question is, what kind of wood should I be looking for, and are there any recommended suppliers in Melbourne's inner north, particularly those that would sell small volumes like this?

Additionally, is a Dremel (with 544 wood cutting wheel) an appropriate tool for making a dove-tail? And is there anything more I'd need to know about finishing than grabbing some random stain and varnish from a hardware store?

    Thanks!

Good Afternoon, velonaut, i should not be posting because I know little but to help you in your research Carbotec sell packages of different wood species.

I buy from Trend Timbers who are near Windsor, NSW. They will post happily.

Hope this is of a little help, Bill.

    Thumbs up

G'day velonaut and welcome to the fount of knowledge!!! Good to have you here just be sure to join in the fun!!!

The type of tim,ber you choose depends on your tastes. Light colour, dark colour, interesting grain pattern, something meaning
in terms of history or some other significance.....

I would not use a Dremel for the task. If you practise on some radiata pine with a good doveetail saw you will get the hang of what to do.

Might I suggest you do a Google search on how to make dovetail joints. You will be overwhelmed with You tube videos. Just pick a couple to
watch and if you like the presentation, watch' em again.

Does a Velonaut launch from a velodrome???
