Default Converting a coffee table to Chest. Toowoomba

    Hi Everyone,

I'm a self taught crafter and this is the largest project that I would like to work on and would like some opinions.

I have a large wooden coffee table with two large drawers that come out the sides. I would like to reduce the depth to be more in line with a blanket box by about 30 cms, take out the drawers and convert to top to a lid. [see pic]

I can't do this job on my own as I don't have all the tools.

    So my questions are these.

If I were to pay someone to alter it for me, about how much would it cost? I like the wood height and length, but I don't know if I should just move it on and buy a blanket box. Which would be more cost effective?

And do you know anyone in Toowoomba, that would work on something like this?

I value everyones opinion, so please let me know what you think!

    Hi SKJ,

The work involved would greatly depend on the coffee table you have, how it has been built and if it would be possible/cost effective to change it.

Indeed, being pine, you may find it easier and cheaper to simply buy a blanket box.

As to how much it would cost? that would depend on how much work is involved in amending your coffee table.

just out of interest, what are the coffee table dimensions?

    cheers
    Wendy

    Thanks for your reply Wendy!

It's 102cm in length, 68cm in width and 42cm in height. I love everything about it, but I just want to change the width/depth to 45cm. Well, that and change it to a box.

Most blanket boxes I see are too tall, so this is perfect that way.....

Hmmm.... I just don't know what to do with it....

It's definitely doable. However, with something that has drawers, it might be better to keep it as is and simply make a blanket box instead.

here's an example: I'm currently building a simple, pine coffee table, 900L x 600W x 400H with a small drawer in the apron. If I don't stuff it up, it will cost less than $125 in materials to make.

    back to you

As Ruffily says, you can't tell what would be necesary for a conversion 'til you get a good look at it. For example, is the bottom complete & adequate for holding a heavy load? I would be very doubtful that it is, so that would need some thought & attention. Cutting the table down& modifying it could be quite a bit more work than making a box from scratch, so you're looking at the cost of several days' work plus finishing (read expensive!). Unless you have some strong nostalgic connection to the wood, and are capable of doing the work yourself, probably not the best way to go.....

    Thanks guys I appreciate that.

I think I'll just move it along to someone else as is, and make a box from scratch. I've never built a box, so it should be interesting. At least it'll be the perfect size!!

    Thanks again!
