Default Got a cool vintage stool....are the pins/tacks copper?

Not entirely sure where to post this but anyway......

Got this neat little vintage stool today for $5 and was just wondering is copper the only metal that goes green? The drawing pins/tacks around the cloth have turned green so would I be safe in guessing they are copper?

Also would you estimate this piece as mid century?

    Thanks guys

    $5. You can't go wrong.

My guess is that they are copper, at least on the outside. Copper tacks are often used for upholstery, but all the ones I've seen have been copper-plated steel, so that might be what you're looking at. One or the other, at least.

If you mean mid 20th century, I'd say you're right. 50s/60s. (Just a guess - I'm definitely no expert.)

    Yep I meant mid 20th
$5 is a bargain I think, retro seems to be the in thing lately.....although it does need re upholstering.
hmmm yes copper plated would make more sense.
    Thanks for that steve.

Copper is very soft for an upholstery nail. I'd be more likely to go with Brass.

As for the colouring they've gone, Brass Verdigris is more the bluish colour that you show in your picture than the greenish verdigris of copper.

    Hi Veg
I have 60 year old copper nails in the shed with the blue oxidization, i also have little brass bolts that show none just gone black.
If you are going to recover it yourself i could post you some clean nails and roves[like new] to do the job

I may be wrong but the upholstery looks out of sink with the stool design and could be a re-do. Thinking mid 60's with a red or yellow synthetic upholstery Nice pick up Louise cheers kerry

    Default The Tacks / Nails.

    Hi All,
Would it be possible to try an Earth Magnet on them.
    That should tell you something.
