    Default Cranked tang chisel?

    Hi all,

I've been doing a little work on re-handling chisels and tools lately (going through a bit of a turning phase). I thought I would buy a job-lot of handle-less chisels (is there a word for that?) on ebay cheaply for projects.

It hasn't arrived yet but on this job-lot I picked up:

See the bottom one has a tang that looks badly cranked. Is there any legitimate reason for that? I've seen cranked tools for carving (where the bend is vertically oriented) - think of a burger-flipper. I cannot however think of a reason for a lateral bend like that (in the sense of functional reason - not reason in the sense of "because someone bashed it").

Is this a throw-away out of the lot, when it arrives? It is a tough call to throw a vintage chisel in the bin!

    Many thanks if anyone knows.

    Chris

Heat it up and straighten it.

Yes - not too hard to do.
Probably bent out of shape by some over enthusiastic demolition work or the like.

Just make sure if you heat the bent end up for the repair you don't cool it to fast . Like dipping it in water . let it cool slowly . Even bury it in ash.

Cooling in water could Harden it to the point that it could snap in half if you drop it on the floor .

That one has taken its share of abuse. Like the others say it can be bent back into shape with some local heat. Just make sure not to get the sharp end hot. Going by the tang it would have had a plastic handle to start with but a nice wood handle will be an improvement.

It could be handy to get into corners but you'd need a pair...

I was once told by an experienced blacksmith that if something was bent cold, try first to straighten it cold. If it bent like that it is not particularly hard, so a decent hammer and anvil (or substitute) ought to work.
