Default create from a crate wood

I am toying with the idea of entering the "create from a crate" competition and wondering what to make.
All suggestions may help - not only me but other entrants who use this BB

Some of the timber is elm and oak.
Plus a fair bit of pine, if euro most likely Baltic.
I assume the timber is european but it may be American.
Do elm and oak steam bend readily??

    echnidna,

I picked up a crate and have partially dismantled. Did you work out how to remove the bolts/pins that are embedded in the square section timber?

Don't know about Oak but I am sure that Elm bends easily.
I got a pallet a few years ago made from MDF but the cube spacers were made from Mahogany, I turned up about 20 gear stick knobs for a Mini owners club and put in a a little Mini emblem (stolen from lapel badges).
They sold for $30 each and that was about the first and last time I used a lathe.
The nails that were in the grain I removed with a gear puller with lockgrips attached, was hard work though, I also hung the block on a beam via the nail and used a hammer and block of wood to persuade them to come loose.
Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

A very worthwhile competition. For those who don't know, the Victorian Woodworkers Association and a Recycling company have got together to invite woodworkers to purchase a crate, create a masterpiece and enter it in the high profile annual VWA show.

The works in the past have been fantastic. Prior to the competion, the timber was used to make garden mulch.

Yes, I am an active member of the VWA.

Sorry MarpleMan, I havent even seen a crate, I am only toying with the idea.
I might even pick up a crate and see if the timber gives me an inspiration.

Unlike Woodborer I am an inactive member of the VWA.

Just had a look at the crate web site. They are charging $40 per entry. Each entry gets one crate.

If they can get $40 for a crate that used to go into landfill thats pretty effective recycling.

Maybe they should call it, profitable pallets?

You have lost sight of the fact the VWA does not carry on a recycling business, its just a woodies organisation.

And it costs money to stage competitions and exhibitions.

    Bob,

i have almost finished making a stand for the scroll saw out of the 4X2's from pallets. Some sort of rain forest timber. Some good; some real *****. At least it was cheap. Also have made a cupboard from the same stuff for the thicknesser. Works a treat.

Recyled timber can be practical and if you have the inspiration and time your work can be asthetically attractive. That's what this competition is about.
I find the criteria a trifle limiting as its confined to furniture, art or musical intruments.
