    Default "Creative Wood" magazine?

    Hi,

Just a question our of curiosity....at a garage sale recently, I picked up a whole lot of Fine Woodwork, Aus Wood Review and Au Woodworker magazines. In amongst them was Issue 1 of "Creative Wood" - an Australian magazine, seemingly aimed at the trade/artistic side of woodworking.

There was no date in the issue, only publishing details - I presume it came from the early 90's based on the other magazines I got.

What happened to this magazine - was there ever more than one issue? When was it published? If only short-lived, was it through poor response or other factors that it demised?

Just curious, as I haven't heard of or seen it before.

    Thanks,

    Darren

Darren - is that the one with a ladderback chair on the front? I'd like to know what happened, too! It appeared around the mid 90's - can't remember exactly when, but that was it. Only the one issue and then silence. Someone out there must know the story!
You have to wonder about the viability of w'work mags in our little island. We do pretty well with two, is there room for any more? It would be nice to see a wider range of features and more challenging projects, too, but that will only happen if people contribute them. I imagine there are lots of others out there like me, who are planning a few contributions "when I've finally got the time"! In the meantime, I'm grateful to those who do manage to find time to contribute......
    Cheers,

That one issue seems to have been released from time to time in the newsagents. It's been on the stands at least twice since 1998. Don't know what the story is???

    Default Plot thickens

    Hi,

Yes Ian, that's the issue. Features a number of profiles of makers/craftsmen, mainly full colour and only a couple of ads. No subscription, frequency of intended release or "in the next issue..." type info indicating there was ever intended to be a Number 2.

Be interested to hear where it came from and where it suddenly went.

I agree, given our woodworking population compared to that of the US (or even England possibly) if we could sustain more than a couple of magazines - and the ones we have come out bi-monthly or quarterly. But I think the ones we have are high quality and comparable to the English mags - Fine Woodwork has the advantage of lots of subscribers and advertisers to produce a big monthly issue.

Yes, I'm guilty of the "one day I'll contribute" mindset. But...we're about to move house, I'll have a half-decent workshop, and if I can get a digital camera I may photograph a project or two and write about it.

    Go for it!
I don't even have the excuse of not having a digital camera - it's mostly time-management and the decreasing energy that goes with senior years (a weasily way of saying 'sloth', perhaps?).
Used to belong to a woodie group, too, but had to pull out because I just wasn't getting to meetings, etc.
But I'm determined to have a go at a few articles someday soon - something a bit different, so don't know how much general appeal it might have.......
And no-one seems to have come forth with the real story behind "Creative Woodwork" for you.
    Cheers,
    IW
