Thread: What to use for making a cross cut sled?

I used 12mm ply for mine and it came from Bunnies. I thought for a while I was going to have to go elsewhere to get a flat piece, but after a while of sorting through the stack I eventually found one that was pretty good. By the time I put the front and rear fence on it was nice and flat.

I've just gone through this exercise and finished my first sled only half an hour ago I searched the local timber yards who had very little in the way of plywood, checked Bunnies where the BC quality ply they had was (in my opinion) far too thin and very poor quality, bowed and torn on the surface layer.

I then checked Masters and found the 12mm AA Marine ply 610 x 1220 ~ perfect for my needs and only a couple of $ dearer than the poorer quality at Bunnies.

Mine's made from 12mm mdf and laminated vic ash for the front and back.

Before I had my current TS with the sliding table I made a sled for my old TS out of ply from Bunnings with scrap hardwood front and back fences. The hardwood was large, heavy and dead straight, which prevented the ply from bending or twisting. And I used hardwood strips for the runners. Waxed the bottom and the runners occasionally and all worked well. Followed instructions that I'm sure I found on this site...
