Thread: Crubber best brand for use on vise jaws

Got supercheap rubberised cork on my wooden vice jaws. Hasn’t torn out like your pictures but I imagine it is something you’d be replacing based on use and if you’re clamping irregular shapes items that can dig in.

I have 1.6mm crubber from Supercheap Auto on my new bench. I haven't used it a lot, but it hasn't shown any signs of tearing. Supercheap have 1.6mm and 3.2mm stuff. I figured the thicker stuff would have a greater chance of tearing.

My original bench vices were clad with 5mm rawhide (one vice still is) but the other vice got soaked in ATF. I did manage to get the ATF out to the point here it does not mark wood but as I was worried the holding power of the "treated" leather I decided to replace it with ebay Crubber.

I did a comparative test of the holding power of the former oiled leather and the Crubber.
Recommended timber for vice jaws?
It turns out they have pretty similar holding power.

That was about 2 years ago and since then the crubber has not stood up to the physical (mis)treatment as well as the leather did in the 13 years it was on there. The crubber edges are getting split and frayed and parts of it needs to be glued back on. Eventually I think I will be replacing it with the original leather faces.

Thanks Bob. My leather faces are just about ready for replacement. I'll go with leather again.

My vice only gets light work but I have found that using non slip matting works quite well.

I use that stuff to line some of my tool drawers and I keep a piece free to use as a workpiece protector to reduce slippage on to of benches.

Ive experienced tearing with both benchcrafted and ebay purchased crubber.
Looking for leads as im currently removing the torn one.

I just use Tas Oak vise jaw pads, replaced as needed, about every 3-4 years.

When things slip - in vise, clamps, or even on the bench top when planing or using hold downs - then I supplement the grip with el cheapo "shelf liner" from Big W. Works a treat.

I used contact cement for both leather and rubber.
