Cubby for the kids...
Hi all.
I have access to plenty of old pallets, crates etc and thought I would make a cubby for the kids.
With the amount of timber I have available I think I should be able to build it for nearly nought, only problem is I'm not sure how to get the job under way.
I'd like it to last for a while, so figure I will probably need at least some treated timber for the base?
To be honest I probably won't go to the extent of plans etc, just start at the start and see where it leads me.
Anyway, if anyone has thoughts, comments or advice I'd love to hear it.

Without sounding too negative don't these two statements sort of counteract each other.
My advice would be to have at least some sort of plan but one that changes to suit the materials you have.
One of the easiest ways to make a cubby is make a large wooden clad box and then cut holes in it for doors and windows etc

Go to google images and type in cubby houses to get some inspiration.

That's one way of getting rid of the pallet wood.
Are you going to use full pallets in the build or dismantle everything and then build?

Hi, been away a little while.
I'll pull the pallets apart I think as there is enough timber to build a frame from.
I have also reclaimed maybe 20m² of treated pine decking.
I'm thinking of building a deck, with a cubbie in the middle and hand-railing around the outside.
I might have to sketch something up, as I'm not sure of the best way to go about the bit that will contact the ground.

Here is one I made from treated pine. I would be inclined to paint/treat your timber so it lasts, but you could do something similar with your available timber if you used treated pine for the stumps/legs.

I could walk under it without hitting my head. The kids loved the rope ladder, which they would pull up after scampering up to the cubby. The boys used to invite their mates over and sleep in it. It was a big hit.
Must be getting old. The youngest of the boys in the pic is now 29, married with a family.

I really do not want to the the proverbial bucket of cold water but there was a case in the news here in Adelaide where a neighbor complained about a cubby and the builder had to spend the next few monts justifying it to council. So my advice would be to brush up on your council regs and make sure you are on good terms with your neighbors.
In any case - good luck with your build.

So researching for plans I found a kit for $215 delivered which meant I could have it done for Easter. As an aside, our council has an approval exemption form where if you can tick the right boxes you don't need approval. So the Easter bunny delivered it and I assembled it.
I even had the boss working...

Who is the client?
Just reading the post here re building a cubby house there is no mention of the kids??????
If it is for them then they should be part of it right from the start and need to be listened too (this is the hard bit),,or unless it's a project for you... and if the kids have only a short like for it because then not part of it then go for it.vapourforge.com
