This is where I’m at with ours. I bought the IKEA LONSET Set for $150. Then I made a base frame myself - which was necessary because it has to meet some custom requirements. Then I removed the slats, rubber pockets and webbing strips from the IKEA units and fitted them to my base frame
The rubber pockets were simply stapled to the timber sides, as per the ikea version, so I assume they don’t get a lot of twisting forces.
The four strips of black webbing have ‘slots’ through which you thread the slats. Then the webbing is fixed at either end with a bit of tension. The slats are restrained in their slots in the webbing and can only move about 4mm (towards or way from the photographer).
I assume the black webbing absorbs most of the twisting forces, rather then the rubber pockets, otherwise I can’t see it lasting a long time especially if held together with staples.
Seems to work OK.
you could make these strips yourself given a sewing machine and some webbing (purchased from spotlite or perhaps Bunnings).
I hope I interpreted your question correctly.

I had the same problem, the rubber ended up perishing/tearing over time. I got some paracord (could also use webbing etc), then layed out the slats equally spaced and stapled the cord to the slats, remaking the original ladder style setup.
On my bed frame there is a lug/block at the top and bottom end that the two end slats can be lightly stretched over, tensioning the ladder of slats - once in place, the tension & matress weight holds them all in place.
