    Ned,
the trick is to keep an even hand on the saw, pressure wise, so that it cuts pretty close to the same depth every time.

    Guess.

In the olden-days, I used the tablesaw & router table. Cut the mortice first, and then the tenon to size.

At work I use the bandsaw for larger ones and the radial arm saw for smaller ones. I don't have a RAS at home and occasionally hand cut them. My SCMS has nothing as refined as a depth stop...I have thought of a mod though.
Mortices I usually drill and chisel, but now I have a Rocker morticing jig for the router...I should bl##dy well use it!!

I mostly use a backsaw, also happy using a bandsaw. Safe and quiet.

I posted this yesterday from a WIP.

At the moment, I use floating tenons....off my shopsmith in a horizontal mortiser type arrangement.....pretty dam quick, and clean. Not as noisey as a router either.
