If you had a table leg which is square and you wanted to cuta through mortise into the corner how would you do it? So the rail runs diagonallyunder the table

Build a cradle that holds the legs so the edge is point up then use a router to cut out a mortice on the edge.

Yep this is what I was thinking but was wondering if there was any other way.

Is this something anyone has tried? With a spiral upcut bit how do the edges look on the other side with a through mortise?

Its a very well proven technique - been around since Adam was a pup. Variations are to use it on a drill press and then trim with a chisel, use it on a chisel mortiser, use it upside down on a router table, etc.

But the 45 degree mortices as shown are only appropriate for square tables. If the table is oblong then that angle will vary.

I find that a spiral downcut bit gives a slightly cleaner entry hole and a spiral upcut bit gives a slightly cleaner exit hole. But none of my spiral bits are long enough to go diagonally through a table leg, so I am unable to comment on a diagonal exit hole. But why would you want to go right through the leg?
