Cutting full sized panels?
G'day!
As previously mentioned, I'm in the throes of making up some housing cabinets for my big screen TV, home theatre, Hi-Fi, etc.
As I'm getting a bit low on Red Gum stock (of which the cabinets are essentially constructed from), I gave Brims a call and found that, yes, they do have some RG veneered board. So, it's off to Brims I go, and order a couple of 8' x 4' boards (blerry exensive, mind: nearly $600 for two boards, including $20 for delivery) - but nice stuff. Heavy too, which worries me a bit, as I'm the poor sod who'll have to move the assembled components...
My question is this: The boards are much too large to be accommodated on my T/S (12" contractors saw from Timbecon), so am I forced to hand cut to approximate size according to my cut list, or would you folks here recommend either a jigsaw (rough dimensioning only) or using my one and only circular (GMC - mucho crappo) saw - which'll zoom off on a tangent or random curve at the fart of the nearest earthworm?
The thought of cutting all that 18mm board with a hand saw gives me palpitations - never mind the actual doing Also, there's no way I can handle a full panel size on the B/S, even with supporting roller stands.
Anyone got a nifty laser cutter I can borrow?
Cheers!

Grab a bit of sheet stuff, mdf or cheapo ply, two full length pieces, one with the factory edge to it.
So, you have a nice, straight edged piece, and one rageddy POS. Glue and staple(?) the piece with the good edge to the other bit, putting the good edge away from the crappy edge by a little bit more than the base plate of the saw is wide. You should end up with a long thing that has a flat for the saw to run on and an edge for the base plate to run against.
First cut will take the excess off the base piece, so when you mark your cut, sit the edge of the guide on the marks, clamp it down and cut away.
Still as clear as mud?
Google circular saw guide.
Or you could hunt down that 'Dino' fella, I'm sure he'd be happy to flog off one of his fantabulous things to you...

G'day Peter!
Thatnks for the offer, but I may just visit a certain Bungoes tomorrow to see if there are any of the 25% off deals available as mentioned on this BB earlier on a Makita or Bosch C/S.
If I had the space (not to mention the cash!), I'd love a nice Hammer, or Felder, or Martin, or Awwwww,
In any case, I really do need to thinkl about moving from a contractor saw to something better. Where does it end? Woe is the hobby woodie!
Cheers!

Was I ripped then? Invoice price, including the 15% discount (!) for 2 x 2440 x 1220mm 18mm RG particle board was $535.05, plus $22 delivery.
I must admit i did gape a bit at the price, but then I needed the stuff...
Cheers!

Thanks Schtoo - I have some long straight edge clamps that might work - it's just that the GMC C/S has a mind of it's own. No matter how firmly I hold it, even against a straight edge, the bugger'll veer off unexpectedly.
Time for burial of that item, methinks.
Cheers!

That staggers me. how can they charge that. i know red gum is a dificult dollar wise at the best of times and veneer isnt as easy to get as other natives but that is outragous. i bet you wont have ANY off cuts going into the bin

Yeah Red, what's the go ? Brims is the only place I've found with a reasonable variety of Aussie species veneered boards. I'd love to hear about a cheaper alternate supplier.
Cheers,
Justin.

What really is grating my tail is that, if I can cut according to my cut list, I'll only need about 10% of the second sheet, but one just won't be enough.
I did think about going for another veneer, but that would spoil the whole thing, as I've gone to some trouble to make the face frame from 2.5mm RG laminated over some Cypress that I had lying around, such that the whole facade plus end panels and tops are all grain-aligned RG.
Still, total cost of material for a 1.2m high, 0.65m deep and 2.75m wide array of cabinets, including shelving hardware and cooling fans, etc is still under $820, so not that bad. Ish...
Cheers!

Actually that's a very good idea! Thanks mate, I'll give it a whirl on some scrap and see how it works.
Amazing how the obvious frequently isn't!
Thanks!
