    Default Cutting skirting boards accurately.

    Hi,
I'm laying skirting boards in a friend's new house. I'm using a cast-metal mitre box to cut the ends at 45-degrees. Up till now my results are accurate and neat.

I've hit a snag. Other walls don't meet at 90-degrees. My mitre-box is cast at 45-degrees and will cut at no other angle. I shall have to cut freehand.

So how do you mark out fresh angles on the boards? I have to work on internal and external corners.

I'm hoping members might recommend websites where the required techniques are explained.

But any suggestions, recommendations, hints, tips and comments shall be gratefully received.

    Regards,

    Kevin

You could put a packer of desired thickness between the timber and fence at the end of the mitre box. 1/8th packers work well gives a few extra degrees above 45deg for when the plasterers build external corners out a little to far.(scribe internals)

    Do a scribed cut.
The first skirt goes on the wall with both ends cut square (full length). (Usually the wall opposite the most common entry.)
On the right hand wall, cut a 45deg mitre, then using a coping saw, etc, cut the waste from the mitre, ie keeping to the line created by the face of the board and the angled cut. You need to scribe the right hand end of the left board and the left hand end of the right hand board.
Square cut the other end of each, and finish with scribes on either side, to the door.
    Confusing?
Do a search on these forums and you should get a better description.

    edit: this for internals, obviously.

    Default Cutting skirting

    Thanks Termi,

What you've said is clear. I'm going to practise using pieces that I'll nail to some scrap MDF. They'll be at almost 90-degree angles to each other but not quite. Then I'll use your technique on offcut moulding to skirt those nailed pieces.

    Cheers,

    Kevin
