Dan's Shaker Inspired Christmas Boxes
I've nearly completed two projects ready in time for christmas. They are a pair of matching blanket boxes for use as toy chests. The design is based on a smaller box in the Pleasant Hill Shaker Book. The work in progress can be see at my blog The Love of Wood.
One box is for my nieces (aged 1 and 3) and the other my daughter (aged 9 months.)
Currently they have a layer of thin de-waxed shellac as a sanding sealer. I debated for ages on what finish to you. I thought of paint or even chaulk board paint. But then decided on a stain to show off the grain and joinery.
Keen to try something new, I bought some Feast Watson liming solultion with a cedar stain to make the pieces a subtle pink. However, I mixed up half the solution and it wasn't so subtle.
Hmmm. I could ignore the stain and just continue with the wipe on poly. Or just go ahead. In the past I've always used old baltic stain on pine with good results.
Any thoughts?

A great pair of chests. The kids should fit nicely into each of them

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

You have been busy Dan, all that web work and woodwork and work. How many arms do you have?? The boxes look great, hand cut DT's?

I like the idea that you have with a pink dye. I think you might need to be a lot more subdued with the colour. Nice looking boxes but the way.

Nice work Dan - they should keep the toys tidy for a while - i.e. for 5 minutes after the weekly clean-up!
I have had nothing but bad experiences trying to stain or dye P. radiata - you are up against the odds on that task. I quite like a plain old polyurethane finish on this sort of thing. It's tough & practical & mellows with the pine a bit as it ages - not as nicely as Hoop, but it's a little less stark after a year or so....
Cheers,IW

Thanks for the comments.
After running a another few test pieces.
My sister voted to leave her's plain.
My wife voted to have ours white.
(You can tell the women have all the power here...)
But to answer Claw Hama's comments about my many hands, it is my wife that's looked after the house and kid, while I've been mucking around in teh shed.
Looks like I didn't photo the dovetail progress... I did get some pics of the wax melter I did just prior.

First time I've been able to use my W&S saw.
Back to the project...
So one is white, and one is plain, both have a single layer of shellac and 4 layers of wipe on poly matte.
I'm going to retro fit hardware, but they're nearly done. I'm thinking a piano hinge. My blog: ~ for the love of wood ~ - http://theloveofwood.blogspot.com/

Great boxes Bob . Pity you have to cover the DTs with paint .
What are the hinges that are suitable for a box like this which are child safe i.e. child can't drop the lid on fingers.
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan
