How to darken zinc coated steel???
We have double doors that open out onto a veranda from our living room. There is a step down from the room to the brick paved floor of the veranda. With the doors open, there is a drop from the bottom of the door to the brick surface of a little over 150 mm.
I have found the perfect barrel bolts, with the right amount of travel to reach from the doors into holes drilled in the brick paving, but they are zinc coated steel.
I want them to be a darkish colour so that they don't look odd on the wooden (WRC) doors.
I am reluctant to just paint them because the paint will be scraped off by the action of the bolts. I am hoping there is some way to discolour the zinc coating so as to make it dark.
Before someone jumps in and says it, no, letting them rust is not really the answer. That would look even tattier than the bright finish.
It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

Spirits of salts does funny things to zinc.
Try it on a scrap first.

Electrolysis with some lead? - just make sure that the polarity is right - suggest some empirical experimentation first with some scrap...

The problem is that you "stole" an image of Frankenstein & we can't see it 'cos it was "stolen"Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Al, you "stole" the image...
The pic below is what you can see, the one that we see says you stole it & I haven't figured out how to steal a copy of it yet....
OK, I worked it out now.....Cliff.
