Dead rat smell
You can't get rid of the animal, which is a nuisance, but the area soaked (even a small hole drilled into the floor) with lemon-scented tea-tree will kill the smell.
Mine was a dead possum in the wall so I put an electric essential oil burner near the hole and topped the oil every day for a week. I did close off the area so that I didn't have to smell 'death'.
Worked for me.

Dead rat.....
I cut the two trapdoors by getting a circular saw with a "thin kerf" blade and this did the job of cutting two lines across the boards, The insert was cleared just by pushing out. The cutout boards were then fixed together with glue at first, and then with nailed hardwood slats. A rim around the opening was made with sections of dressed pine niled (with the aid of pilot drilled holes) to the joists and the lid replaced. Any wobbling was negated by laying down cardboard shims. A brass folding pull-up was sunk into the lid.
However the dead rat could not be found; perhaps the termites ate it?

I agree with the others , if the smell is receding leave it , if as you say it's near the rear of the house,
I would look at outside access possibly , and spray in a qty of Phenol,or similar, this will help with the smell and disinfect the area as well.
Last resort is to cut the trap door, but there is no guarantee that you will be in reach(yuck) of the offending deceased animal
Can you beg borrow or steal a camera with a small probe , drill a couple of small holes and look under the flooring ( like they use for inspecting pipes)

The smell will definitely go away so to go to great lengths trying to locate the offending beast is really not worth the hassles. Believe me, it can be very difficult to pinpoint the exact location under the floorboards.
Reality is no background music.
