designing a draw for undermount draw slides
I'm after some assistance designing a drawer for undermount drawer slides.
I'm keen to try undermounts because I've heard they have really smooth action, but I don't really know what is involved in fitting them. In particular, I would like to know the clearances you need to leave around the side of the drawer, and the length of slide I should buy.
The drawer is going to go into a butcher's block I made for the kitchen. It will be the only draw in the unit. Internally the carcass measures 450 x 450. I guess the drawer would be about 100mm deep, it will be for holding knives.
Any help really appreciated.

Half an inch on each side for both side and bottom mount slides is the rule, no less and you have a smidge of adjustment in the newer slides if the hole is too big.

has the diagrams and sizes listed. You can get single sets from Elraco

Not so long ago, I asked a commercial maker I know a similar question
His recommendation for undermount slides was to use the Blum Tandembox for wooden drawers 560H series. They attach under the drawer and are invisible when the drawer is open.
Full extension and generous weight capacity.
His advice on fitting them was:
"The drawer size is non negotiable, ie the depth of drawer not width but they are made in 50 mm increments.
"Get very clear on how to install them before you cut any wood.
"Very clear."
I suggest you make a mock-up drawer and don't start the real drawers till you have the sildes you're going to use.

thanks for the help brslee, but I was after info on fitting undermount slides. the ones that sit under the drawer and are concealed. I think bottom mount slides are still side mounted, but they sit lower down on the side of the drawer.

thats 5.5mm clearance on each side using 16mm board so the size of the bottom would be 325 wide

The Tandom Box 560H are concealed.
they attach to the underside of the drawer and the drawer sides cover the part of the mechanism mounted within the cabinet.

I just got some undermount slides for the first time and found them rather confusing. Ended up making a mockup from scrap wood to try to get my mind around it. Glad I did because there are a lot of ways of getting it wrong.

If so let me know and I will rat out the name of the Australian importer and some local distributors. I purchased some Accuride side mounted slides and had to go to Windsor for them. Somewhere I have a national distributor list.Bob

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

There is a very good article about undermount slides in the June 2008 (No 198) edition of Fine Woodworking. It reviews 9 models and gives installation methods for various types of drawer.
