The new desk
Over the years I have built a lot of commissioned furniture for a lot of people, but never built anything for myself. My "desk" consisted of a sheet of an off cut from a sheet of 3/4" ply proped up on a wall cleat and two legs. I had a some of maple left over from some other jobs, so it seemed like a good idea to build myself a new desk. I wanted it along traditional lines. The problem was going to be getting it into the house, so I decided on a pedestal desk format.
There is eight drawers involved, one was to be a filing cabinet drawer. Because it would be full of files and heavy, I opted for finger joints instead of dovetails and placed it at the bottom of the left hand pedestal. That turned out to be a serious design fault. I can't read the bludy labels on the files. All the other drawers are hand dovetailed front and back.
It is made from solid Queensland maple. The top has only two joints. It was finished with polyurethane diluted with 10% turps and hand rubbed with a rubber.
The desk measures 1500mm long, 750mm wide and 800mm high.
I think it turned out ok.

Top job! Is the desk one piece, or is the top separate from the pedestals? I have a kneehole/pedestal desk on my radar too.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I really like that. Now have to stop the wife from seeing it.
Cheers,

Thank you all for the nice comments. And yes, I am probably better known for segmented wood turning, but a change is as good as a holiday?
W.W. yes it is three pieces, two pedestals and a top unit. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to get it into the house, and that could have been a tad embarrasing.
