Dilemma: Continue saving for TS or grab cheap jointer
Hi
I'm in a real bind....
I have an opportunity to purchase a good brand 6" jointer at a heavily reduced price. About half the ticket price.
Do I grab it or do I keep my money and push on toward the table saw I want?
I already have a thicknesser, so I know that with a sled I could get a flat side using that (and a hand plane if needed also), and then joint an edge using the TS.
I mainly want to build furniture... small tables for TV's, pot plants, side tables for the bedroom... that sort of thing. Having limited time each weekend for shed time, my aim is to use machinery for basic dimensioning and getting stock straight and true but then using hand tools for joinery and final dimensioning etc.
Is there anything I'm missing in this debate? Currently I cut using either my circ saw or hand saws. I've gotten by without a TS so far, so do i grab the jointer while its cheap?
Hurry! This is one time when your opinions are actually wanted!
Cheers
Tom

Grab the jointer and start saving again. It's tax time soon so that might help soften the credit crunch.

Tom,
Grab the jointer. Then start saving again for the TS. If you find that your not using the jointer that much at least you can sell it.

+1 for the jointer. You will want both eventually, so get at least one of them on the cheap*
*speaking of which, I see some pretty cheap prices for used stuff on ebay lately-maybe there will be a saw bargain too when you're ready.

IMO it depends where you get your raw timber from. If you're buying retail/wholesale timber, where you can get roughly the right dimensions and just need to straighten it - get the jointer. If you're nicking/recycling timber from where ever you can and need to resize a lot of it, get the table saw.
I use almost entirely recycled timber, and didn't think I'd need a table saw until I got a cheapie. Now it's the most used power tool I have.
..but at the end of the day, you DO want both as Wongo said.

If you're recycling timber, your need for a jointer would increase I believe. You need to start with a straight reference edge and that is what jointers do.
However, the table saw is more useful. You really want both, so the question comes down to whether you take the cheap price now or stay on track for the table saw purchase. If you plan to get both, I suppose it depends how long it will take you to make up the short fall. A jointer is not a lot of use on it's own, but if you intend to get one anyway and you can save half the price by buying now, it seems like an easy enough decision to me."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

Thanks for the replies.
It'll take about 10-12 weeks to make up the savings. So i think i'll grab the jointer.
Just waiting on a response from the retailer to confirm its still available.
The TS i have in mind is the Jet pro-shop and those things are never on sale and never come up on ebay. So I can be pretty safe in knowing that i'm not going to miss out on bargain on it in the next few months. Hopefully the AUD keeps on rallying and the price comes down by the time I have saved enough for it. Not holding my breath on that one though....
Please excuse my ignorance but who is Bob Hudson??

The guy who sung the Newcastle song, which contains the line:
And all of a sudden there was a break in the traffic,
and as any young Newcastle lad knows-
when you're getting monstered
by a nine foot tall Hells Angel
and there's a break in the traffic....
Don't you ever let a chance go by, oh Lord
