    Default DIY Drum Sander Builders

I've seen a slew of Drum sander builds. This thread below has two such builds that are nearly epic
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f44/hu...-sander-47750/

I PMmed Golden Earring and I'm guessing he's not around much coz he didn't reply.
I'm looking for information on the long term viability of the MDF disk drum.
How long does it last in daily use? Does it eventually fall apart?
Does it last longer if it's treated with a penetrating epoxy?
Or maybe with the Velcro hook & loop ?

One of the ideas I've been trying to research is the idea of making a concrete drum - cast in a big PVC pipe - and adding additives to the mix make it slightly flexible.

Pouring concrete is an interesting exercise in physics. When we built the Gosford Leagues Club and the adjoining car park, the whole thing was build on friction piers. These piers were pretty deep and required pouring baffles at regular intervals down the hole. Purpose being, to stop the liquid concrete seperating into weight related portions as it plumeted to its final resting place. I wonder if the same would be the case, be it on a much smaller scale, when placing concrete into a pvc tube. My point being, the resultant casting may well be gravel at one end, fines at the other, thus a balance issue.

I can see 2 other problems with concrete filled drums.
First is the weight. The motor will draw a lot of power to get that spinning when first started and may trip circut or blow fuse. When up to speed it will be good however as the momentum will carry the load like a flywheel.
Second and the hardest problem will be trueing up to circular. You only have the plastic thickness to play with. The particleboard disc drums (or mdf or wood) are turned back to circular after mounting in the machine.
Not saying it cant be done but it will pose problems .
    Regards
    John

Balancing might be an issue as well, I doubt that any cement mix is totally uniformin density or lacking in voids
