    Default Domino Bench dog upgrade.

All credit for the idea goes to Lignum.

This is the cleanest and most functional bench top I have ever used. Normally I have always just used a top made of joined together bits of chipboard coated with every kind of paint, oil, glue you can think of.

So I scored a nice 10" Dawn quick-release vice and a neat little 4" bench vice(on top, up the end) off ebay, as well as the other small inherited blue vice needed to be re-mounted (properly), so I thought I may as well put a new top on and throw in some bench dogs.

Never have used the dogs before but they appear to be a very useful concept, so don't laugh if I have done something unusual.

The small blue vice on the front of the bench was made by my grandfather who was an engineer and actually did all the casting himself. Oddly enough it didn't have any off-set in the jaws, so I tapered the timber jaw to make up for it.

Very Kewl, Martrix! I can't tell from the pics what that new top is made of? But the idea of dominoes for dogs is very creative. Might have a go at one like that myself.

Hi HB, yeah woops left that detail out. The top is 25mm/1" MDF. with a couple of coats of past due date wipe on Poly . Also, to make the domino's easier to take in/out, I just gave them a few taps with a hammer to slightly compress them.
Plunging all of the holes probably took about 3 minutes using the adjustable indexing pins and a straight edge. Mark and plunge the first one and then use the pin for the rest.....too easy.

Whether you do the holes in an old or new bench, make 100% sure you know where the fixing screws are. I don't think trying to put a mortise in a 2" screw will improve the cutter.

Thought maybe that was the case. Looked so nice and flat. I definitely think that's a goer.
    Cheers,
