Donating Work
With 2010 nearly gone its got me thinking, in 2011 I want to start giving back, sometimes the act of giving is more rewarding than making the peice itself.
Do any formites donate there work? any suggestions on what or who to donate to?
I was thinking of something fairly small chair/coffee table sized, maybe an on going thing. Who knows if there other interested parties maybe we can turn it into a group project annual event.

Hi joez, It is indeed sometimes better to give than receive and is nice to give something back to society. I give most of my toys away that I make and when I make something for a friend I don't charge them for it. I like to give things from the heart and I don't like to put a price on something that I have enjoyed making.
What you are thinking sounds great to me and is a nice gesture on your part.
I am sure whatever you decide to make and donate to someone they will be very happy with it and in turn, you will be very happy too. that's the way it works.
Goodonya my friend.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

In the past, I have often waived the cost/part cost of restoring an antique if the owner is genuinely deserving (and if I they're good sorts and I have enjoyed working on the piece of furniture).
The few hiatuses in my WIPs are usually because I'm working on something for a gift. As it happens, I've been working on a couple of things over the past few days. I don't want to mention the items as they are to be a surprise and I suspect one of the recipients checks in here periodically..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

My wife and I own and run a retail business, as such we are approached on a regular basis by all and sundry, looking for donations for all sorts of causes.
While we cant give to all of them, we are regularly giving things to the deserving ones, and the ones that support us are usually given something.
Lately I have given away some of the pens that I make. Usually I give one that has been sitting on the shelf for the longest.
Helps keep my stock rotating as well as advertising my pens, helps out both ways, and doesnt cost too much.
Reminds me I was talking to a Lady a few months ago, she told me her Daughter had some rare form of cancer, and they were going to do a monster centsale soon to raise money to help , I told her to come and see me when she was ready and I would give her a pen as one of their prizes, I havent seen her for a while now. I hope she hasnt forgotten my offer.

Joe, I'm in a local woodworking club and we are encouraged to donate pieces for club sales. For a turner, that's easy as we turn more stuff then we can readily give away to family and friends. One of the older, more mature members made a box at one of the box making courses that the club runs, then did a production run of a few for family and friends, he donated a couple of "extras" to the club.

Hi All, I manged to get through to a centre manager at St Vincents and they told me coffee tables, nested tables, side tables are always in short supply.
So I think I'll start we some coffee tables and go from there depending on what timber I have available.

Most woodcraft/turning clubs hold raffles as fund raisers and the prizes are usually donated by members. Some make toys and then donate them to charities for distribution to deserving recipients either local or in outlying areas prior to Christmas and they are always welcome.
For anyone wishing to make a donation of their craft items I am sure that you will soon find a grateful charity, person or organisation such as Apex or Lions.
It is a good feeling being santa any time of year.
