Dowel on 18mm MDF
Hi there,
1st: I'm a newbie.
2nd: I'm currently a H6500 dowel jointer for executing my concealed corner joints
Now, executing my first project I face a dilemma. Looking at some web articles, I've read that the dowel should not have a diameter larger than half of the thickness of the material being joined.
The H6500 doesn't seem to deal properly with 18mm boards, with the 6mm and 8mm positioning totally misaligned in relation to the board. It leaves me with the 10mm hole reasonably aligned but, above the half of the thickness rule.
Should I care about the half of the thickness "rule" and go with the 8mm joint or proceed with the 10mm hole?
Cheers

Hi Trixpan and welcome,
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by misaligned. Do you mean not centred on the thickness of the MDF?
Likewise I don't know how much experience you have had with MDF but one of its vices is that it swells where the moisture from the glue has been absorbed. This swelling shows through to the outer surface and, if you sand it off and then the swelling reduces, you then have a hollow rather than a bump!
If I understand you correctly, I would use the 8mm dowel and setting and, if it is off centre, position it so that the dowel centre is furthest from the visible face of the MDF.
