Best dowelling drill bit
Can anyone recommend a good quality 10mm dowel drill bit? I bought a new Makita drill set at Bunnies yesterday, on special for $18, and the brad point dowel bit would not even cut into soft pine Goodness knows how the steel drilling bits and the masonry drilling bits will perform.
I need something that will cut into hardwood with ease, and maintain a straight lineLast edited by Dengue; 17th May 2012 at 04:25 PM. Reason: Added brad point

...are you using a dowel jig or free handing?
Hard to believe a brand new drill set even from bunnies can be that blunt!!!

No offence, but when drilling into the pine was the drill set for forward or reverse?
Been there, done that!

Right ! The dowelling bits I am referring to are brad point bits, even the Makita ones. At the time I did check the drill bit rotation too, and it was correct.
I am using a Silex#30 dowelling jig, and drilling in to kwila.
What I am looking for is a good quality brand of brad point dowel drill bitregards,

P&N and I can't remember the other Australian one, I think they are the same company though.
Cheers,

Try the CMT brad point, Jill. I use it all the time, gives great results even in Ebony, Red Gum, Jarrah, Wenge and so on.You'll find it here

thanks for this info , Steve, am considering getting them at that price
Have been following your heart shaped box with interest, talk about a rollercoaster ride. Loved the handle, and the part about the CA glue fixing up the cracks that looked like scratches. One day it is junked, the next it is back, albeit smaller in sizeregards,

I'll tell you in a few days. P&N do have a good reputation and usually make quality drill bits.
And, after all, everything is made in China these days.
They also have a 10-piece set that goes from 2mm to 6mm, $30, free postage.
I'm buying both sets. I'll give 'em a good test in a couple of hardwoods, (got plenty of Jarrah), then report back.
Edit: Just bought them. They're just up the road on the Central Coast, so won't take long.
Jill, it has been a roller-coaster, but hopefully all downhill now I've got decent gear to work with. Bought a 6" disk/4" belt sander today.
I'll update my thread in a couple of days when it's worthwhile.... Steve
