You could try banging a piece of timber through an appropriatley sized ring spanner, ie; 1/2" ringy = 1/2" dowel. It even gives you the flutes down the side. I am sure you will have a spanner lying around somewhere.

i recently purchased 1 carton(3600) of 8mm dowells for $85
and 1 carton of 10mm for $111. at that price, i could'nt resist. it would take me forever to produce those quantities.
