Tony - the best quality in bulk I could find were from Standard Drawer Slide - 45kg Hope this helps.

find a buddy with an ABN (or set one up for yourself) and set up a trade account with your local cabinet hardware distributor.

Still not cheap, but significantly cheaper than going to your usual spots and paying retail price for them.

Having said all that, unless you're building something custom, its can be cost effective to buy a tool chest/trolley from any hardware store. Especially considering the cost of plywood these days...

Agree with GM2's suggestion, Tony.

I have written about this before, but I trialled a pile of runners ten years ago - those full extension runners were then around $15 for 550mm ones and were the best value for money. Full extension gives you free access to the backs of drawers - effectively makes them bigger!

Just price some Blum or Hettich runners to put that quote in context. Alternative sources of supply are IKEA, and both Blum and Hettich agents.

Those powder coated runners sold by BigChain are absolute crap and grossly over priced, in my evaluation.

Another to try is Hafele, I have bought from direct. Good luck

I have needed drawer runners a few times over the years. I have gone to local cabinet makers (Canberra and Wangaratta, Vic) and been successful each time purchasing from them. $20 for a pair of heavy duty Hafele 550mm.

I can't claim to have made these myself but once upon a time (in N.A.) I had a desk with grooves, parallel to the desk top, cut into the sides of the drawers. Inside the desk carcass were wooden 'ridges'/ 'rails ' projecting from the inside of the carcass. On these the drawers slid in and out smoothly.

Would something like that work for you? I'm assuming you have a wood work shop with the necessary tools/equipment. Commercial drawer slides are expensive.

Ive seen 3 options that will save on cost if I go this way

1 is what you suggest
2 is the drawer base is wider than the sides and slides in a groove on the carcase frame
3 is simply making timber runners that the dawer slides on and the runner above is close enough to the top of the drawer side that it cant tip

Id love them but I need the 500mm and @ $28.14 X 18 drawers = $500. plus they are outta the question

I split my time between NZ and Sydney. In NZ I can buy Hafele drawer runners from Bunnings and Mega Mitre10 for the same price as their terrible Goliath ones - eg about $21NZD for a standard 450mm pair or $26NZD for soft close. But here in Oz, nope, you need a trade account, no direct sales and Bunnings offer zero choice other than Goliath. Normally stuff in NZ is anything up to DOUBLE the price of Australia. But for drawer runners (and plywood) it's the other way round. Cheaper than here for good quality stuff by a long way. Help me understand .....
