    Question Drawer Slides

    Howdy all,

Quick question for the all the experts out there.....

I have been asked to make a desk for a friend and they have a casio keyboard that they want on a slideout drawer, not hard if the desk was the depth of the keboard however what they want is as follows :

    desk approx 1200X650
    casio keyboard 950X400

they would like to put the keyboard on a sliding drawer under the top (full width of desk, still not too hard) but what they want is when the drawer is extended the keyboard is clear but when it is pushed back under the desk it goes ALL the way to the back leaving a clearance of about 250 in the front for small knees (this is for their kids).

Anyone have any ideas of how to do this ? Can I purchase a set of slides and cut down the runner so that it retracts into the back or does anyone have a better idea on how I can achieve this.

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

    Steve

I built my keyboard drawer like this. The slides came from Mitre 10 (only place I have seen them).

I'm doing a similar thing for some cabinets at work. I got the extension slides from Lincoln Sentry.

either use overextending slides or just run the slides full depth with a short board on them.

I would just recomend that heavier slides are used to take the weidgt & pounding on the keys.

thanks one and all for the quick responses....

Derek you said that you did it the same way , do you mean that you cut down the slides so they were shorter than the side supports ?

thanks once again for your help

Not sure if I'm on the right track. But my suggestion would be two sets of drawer slides.
Have a piece of say 68x19 mounted on either side mounted to underside of desk.
Have first set of slides mounted to a piece of 42x19 so they can slide out their full length. Then mount your tray to these with second set of slides, they then should be able to extend out their full length.
The only problem I can see is one of leverage down with weight and use.
I think this could be helped with a cleat attached on each side to the 68x19 to support the 42x19.

Why go to that trouble when you can buy runners that are designed to do that in anycase. And the price is much cheaper than using two sets of runners.
