    Default Laminating

Got no help home so trying my luck here.

I got a load of rubishy wood left over after cuting up some 3"x 1" sycamore, the next preparation is for around 30 ft. of 18 x18mm.
Can I laminate this sycamore along the grain(cut to 6mm x 18mm strips ) between 6mm brazillian mahogany. Upto 18" (450mm) lengths required as per posting.

John, since your strips aren't going to be very wide I think they should be OK. I'd be inclined to make the mahogany thicker & plane it down. Also make it a little wider & reduce it.

I've just laminated up some scraps, it sort of worked OK. What I did was a bit more complicated. First, but-jointed some scraps until they were about 200mm wide sheets, then thicknessed them to 7mm. Then laminated up a heap of sheets to form a block about 100mm thick, all with grain running the same way. Used many clamps, but still finished up slightly thicker at the middle of the block, which I put down to more glue at the edge being able to squeeze out. It'll still be OK for my purposes, but wouldn't you know it, the same day someone posted some pics of their shop-built o'head clamps that would have done the job properly. Why did I do this? All will be revealed in the fulness of time.

    Thanks all for the encouragement.

Two reasons for wanting to laminate the timber, firstly decorative, secondly I have around 30 ft of this sycamore which is very rubbishy; knotty, twisted grain and some spelching. Also a tin of pva glue that is reaching the end of its use date, so might as well put that to a good cause.
