Drill depth stop idea
Here is an idea to use up little off cuts of timber or plastic. (I stole it from somewhere else. )
You can be a plain or as fancy as you like.
You can even just use a bit of dowel & chuck it away when you are finished with it.
Select/cut you block roughly to size & drill a hole through it with the drill bit it is to suit.
Now measure the amount of projection you need against the screw that you are drilling the hole for & set the depth stop at that place.
Now insert the drill bit in the chuck so that the chuck is up against the back of the depth stop.
You may have to cut/sand your depth stop a bit shorter to suit the amount of projection & how much is held in the chuck.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Yep, this works well, I was using this method for a long time. Easy to make, and this depth stop will not slip.

That was something that Mr. Capell taught me in 6th year wood shop, in 1953. I still use the technique today.

Also of your sand about a 3 to 5 deg champfer on the end it stops any chance of marking / defacing a finished surface if you happen to get a grab on the bit or you inadvertently let go
The person who never made a mistake never made anything

Yup. If you are a turner, you can turn it up with a chamfer like a countersink.
Like these ones.

Truth is, I didn't really steal it, I thought of it myself after I saw an advert for plastic ones.
When I googled it, I found that other people had already thought of it so I just stole their photo.
As for paying attention in school, the woodwork classes I did at school used bugger all power tools.
We didn't use screws, just hand tools like a saw, hammer, chisels & glue.Cliff.
