Drill Press Vise
I just bought a drill press vise and realized, unlike many I see in videos, this vise has an horizontal bar under the vise itself so that if you drill too far the bit will engage the bar. How exactly are these vises designed to work in the shop?

I don't understand what the problem is. Are you concerned about hitting the bar or is it in the way? It is just a guide for the moving jaw isn't it?
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Couple of ways to avoid damage to the bar. Use the depth stop is one answer. Leave a gap under the part being drilled and as you know the bar is there take care. If the drill bit is sharp and the right speed is used there is no need to force the bit so exit the bottom of the hole slow and easy.

It looks like it is just a guide, but it also looks like it's flush with the bottom of the jaws, which is the problem - so if drilling a through hole it will snag the bar. That would mean that the job cannot rest at the bottom of the vise for a through hole - by the looks of things. The tip of the drill would have to go further than the base by anything up to 3mm for a larger bit.
Leastways, I think that's what the problem might be.

put a 6mm to 8mm sacrificial piece of material under the job you are drilling, easy..... if drilling metal use wood or vice versa
