    Default Drilling Holes

    Here's a real basic one for you. I'm trying to drill a series of thru holes (7/64"Dia) in mahagony. I set the 3/4" board up on the drill press using a bottom backing board(pine). The holes I drilled splintered the mahagony on the bottom side. What did I do wrong and what should I do to prevent this for the other holes I need to drill?

    Can't be sure but it sounds like not enough down pressure was put on the mahoganey or there were already holes in the backer board that allowed the wood to splinter.

    First Up, what sort of drill are you using,(speedbore, standard spade, large brad etc) and what speed (RPM) this may help us help you

    I Agree,

    Is hard to tell whats going on whithout getting an idea of:

    1. How your clamping down your stock
    2. Wether or not your using a backing board
    3. The RPM you've got your Drill Press Set up at
    4. The type of Drill bit being used eg: Brad
    5. Wether or not your pre drilling with a much finer drill bit first to help reduce chipout?????

    In any event take your time (The biggest cause of chipout for me is when I rush the Job and don't consider my setup)...................A Pic would really help??.....................

    [you are using the wrong bit for thru drilling ,see carbitec and ask for a thru drill in the size you require,this type of drill is made specifically for this type of job

    Thanks for all the advise. All of your suggestions were right. My setup wasn't right and the drill bit I was using was dull. I backed the board I was drilling with a new piece of pine and clamped it tight. I replaced the bit and everyhole came out clean. This is a great forum for newbies, nomatter how old we are, in woodworking. Keep giving advise it really helps us.
