I read somewhere that it’s better to get a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter, since the hole will always end up slightly larger anyway, due to the wiggling factor. So, would an 18mm drill bit suffice? Also, how long should the drill but be?

    Good Morning Pete

Why use such heavy reo, Pete? 8mm (even 6mm) will be heaps strong enough, cheaper if you have to buy it, easier to cut & drill and less likely to weaken the sleepers when drilled through their smaller side.

Galvanised reo would be much better than plain.

    Cheers

I think 20mm rods is too much also....
In any case a hole 2mm under - you may have trouble then driving the rod through. I would drill the same size hole as the rod, then accept a mm or less of wobble is perfectly fine for a garden bed.....

    Hi Pete,
Will you have a corner at the end of each sleeper? If so the easy way is to put a couple of gal straps on each sleeper around the corners. Fix them in place with approiate self drilling screws.
    Cheers

    Hi all,

Thanks so much for all of your input.

In the end, I chose to go for ACQ-treated pine. I went to see the Ecowood products in Bayswater and their garden beds looked pretty good and seemed strong enough for my needs (BTW, this is different to the Ecowood product from Bunnings, which I believe is CCA-treated pine).

They sell the garden beds as kits (pre-cut sleepers, and batten screws), so I ended up buying 6 of them. Instead of sleepers in height, I ordered material to make them 3 sleepers in height (600mm).

Ran into some difficulties in using the batten screws, as I have posted here:

In any case, I will take some photos once things get moving.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers,
    Pete
