Drying a mystery tree - how long?
gracetree.jpgHi all,
A wind around Christmas blew a 10 year old tree in the yard, in HALF. Split it down the middle.
A question. This is the first time I have resawn my own timber, courtesy of an ancient POS Chinese third hand bandsaw recently purchased, derusted and souped up. Good fun. The question is, how long do I need to dry the timber for?
I had the log outside for about 3 months. Then I sliced it into ~13mm thicknesses and left it to fry with spacers on the back table for 4 weeks. I took it into the shed on Saturday, ran it through the thicknesser to 11mm (its flaaaaaat) and trimmed a lower edge with the TS and a new sled and holddown.
Its still dry, but not quite. Hmmmm. I was hoping to use it for a box (I loooove making boxes).
Can I shove a bundle in the oven at 100 degrees for a few hours?
(I would include some pictures, but the uploader is horribly broken)

If it is only 11mm then keep it stickered and flat for another 8 weeks or so well ventilated and out of sunlight. I would avoid the heating it up method. You can check the weight of a board and when it stops loosing weight it should be dry enough to work.
Regards
John
